bp Renegades is the World's Steelpan Champions and the World's Largest, Most Awarded, and Most Traveled Steel Orchestra. Renegades Steel Orchestra is also the highest profiled Ambassador of Steelpan Music, globally. Founded in 1948 as "The Renegades", bp Renegades is one of the world’s oldest surviving steel orchestras.
Now celebrating its Diamond Jubilee, 75th Anniversary, bp Renegades Steel Orchestra is the reigning National Panorama Champion of 2023.
Renegades Steel Orchestra has received several awards, including the National Panorama Champions Award (12 times); the Trinidad and Tobago National Medal Chaconia Gold (1992) for its outstanding contribution to the culture of Trinidad and Tobago; several sunshine Awards from the USA; and a Pan Trinbago award (1990), for outstanding contribution to the development of the steelpan movement; and a City of Port of Spain Award (1986). It's important to note that bp Renegades' winning of the Trinidad and Tobago National Panorama Competition on twelve occasions, include a hat trick of wins between 1995 and 1997 (the only steel-band in the large band category to do so) and since 1980, Renegades has placed in the top ten on every occasion bar one, inclusive of several 2nd and 3rd places. bp Renegades is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for playing before the world's largest audience of 2.5 million people when they headlined a concert in 1990 with renowned French composer Jean Michel Jarre in Paris In 2023, bp Renegades also copped the Inter-American Development Bank in collaboration with Pan Trinbago’s Lor Kitchener Award for Steelbands in the Digital Space - Large Conventional Bands Category.
For more than 25 years, bp Renegades has been taking steelpan music to every corner of the globe. In 1993, Renegades performed at the Earth Celebration on Sado Island - Japan, the highlight of which was a command performance featuring the Kodo drummers of Japan, the Kangsadan Orchestra of Thailand, and the Renegades Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2006, Renegades performed at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Sydney and at the Womad Festival in Adelaide, Australia. Renegades appeared at the Folle Journee Classical Festival in France in January -February of 2008, and since then, Renegades has become an annual feature at the Festival. In August 2009, Renegades performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, to commemorate the 47th Anniversary of the Independence of Trinidad and Tobago. The Concert, titled Classics and Steel, sold out in less than 2 hours of the box office opening.
bp Renegades has toured six of the world’s seven continents, the Caribbean, the British Isles, Japan, and La Reunion Island, mesmerizing audiences wherever they go.bp Renegades has performed at several concerts and Jazz festivals all over Europe and Japan, sharing the stage with greats such as Miriam Makeba and Oscar Peterson.
